Ranking The Frank Zappa Albums 48 # 200 Motels

The 200 Motels soundtrack to Frank Zappa’s film 200 Motels was released by United Artists Records in 1971. Like the film, the album covers a loose storyline about The Mothers of Invention going crazy in the small town of Centerville and bassist Jeff quitting the group, as did his real life counterpart, Jeff Simmons, who left the group before the film began shooting and was replaced by actor Martin Lickert for the film.

I have a strange relationship with 200 Motels: I saw the movie when I was around 18/19 and I really enjoyed the surrealness of the story, the fact that Ringo Starr plays the role of Frank Zappa, hearing his orchestral pieces for the first time and of course seeing any Zappa footage in those dark prehistoric pre-internet days was always a joy. I do enjoy watching the film but I don’t get much pleasure from listening to the soundtrack, without the visuals the music falls a little flat in places and I find myself skipping certain tracks to get to the music parts. Another Zappa album that’s not high on my ‘must listen’ list, just watch the film instead. 1.5/5
